A Nurse, A Few Hustlers and Several Fat Children Waddle Into A Bar…

Well last night was a treat, lowculture’s favourite quiz show, Only Connect returned on BBC4 and brought with it more witty ways to make us feel stupid and clever at the same time. Which is always lovely, it’s something akin to the same way that fat kids felt when thinking that they were watching Anna (not Changing Rooms’ Ryder) Richardson in Generation XXL on Channel 4.

We’re not close, Anna and I, in fact we’ve never met, but I can’t imagine we’d get on. She can stand in a room and talk about sex with teenagers without smirking, and I can’t, by law. But not content with talking willies and front bottoms, she’s now moved on to large back bottoms on fat children. Highlights included a mother pouring tubs of salt and oil into a pan while simultaneously telling us that she just doesn’t understand why her daughter is practically spherical. I’m amazed that the narrating Russell Tovey didn’t slip into an impression of Dave Lamb, in fact, as much as I love the Tovey, perhaps Dave Lamb should have done the narration in Come Dine With Me style, it would have added to the amusement, or you know, created some. And next week brings fat toddlers rolling into our living rooms, cheeseburgers in hand (and cheek).

Though actually, only, after a re-watch on 40D, have I discovered that while the trailers suggest otherwise, Generation XXL has nothing to do with Anna Richardson (who despite the above, I do quite love), and actually, she’s banging on about diets tonight on Channel 4 instead in My Big Fat Diet. But I think the above is quite funny, so I’ve left it in anyway but let’s hope that she actually makes an impact on her own show because frankly, she had no stage presence on this one. Unsurprisingly.

Anyway, I digress, last night also saw the return of Hustle, and had the added bonus of dead woman Suzie from Torchwood playing a police woman out to catch the naughty little grifters that we all know and love. And did anyone else notice how hot Matt DiAngelo is looking? When did that happen? I thought for a moment that I might need medical attention. Which brings me neatly (debatable I know) onto another of last night’s highlights, the arrival of Nurse Jackie on BBC2 at 10pm. A-M-A-ZING. That’s the only word to describe it really. If you missed it I strongly suggest that you catch up on the iPlayer because it will be on every day this week and it’s truly a joy to behold. It stars Edie Falco as the drug addled tart with a heart Jackie and, for all you Twilight people it’s also got Doctor Cullen himself, the eternally youthful Peter Facinelli as Doctor Cooper.
