There’s no doubting that in the last year or so the vampire has reigned the supernatural genre with True Blood, Twilight and The Vampire Diaries all attracting huge audiences. On the one hand, this is a good thing (Alexander Skarsgård and Robert Pattinson), but on the other, not so much. I blame the love affair with vampire shows for the untimely destruction of Eastwick. With vampires everywhere, who needs witches? Well for one, me! Actually.
Eastwick tells the story of three women, psychic mind reading artist Roxie (played by the stunning Rebecca Romjin), Joanna (Lindsay Price) the journalist who no man can resist (and if they do, she can hit them with something heavy using telekinesis) and Kat (Jamie Ray Newman) the infinitely fertile earth goddess (literally) who can either bring life or hit your with a lightening bolt, or piano depending on her mood. And Chad, Cougar Roxie’s boyfriend, played by the ridiculously beautiful Matt Dallas.
Based (very) loosely on the book, The Witches of Eastwick by John Updike, and the film of the same name that starred Jack Nicholson, Michelle Pfeiffer, Susan Sarandon and Cher. Eastwick takes the best parts of Desperate Housewives (small town charm), Charmed (magic) and Kyle XY (Matt Dallas) and joins them into a fully fledged silly camp romp of amazingness. And so obviously ABC cancelled it. And that’s not even the worst part. Thirteen episodes have been made, eleven have been aired. The final two, previously due to be aired in January, have disappeared into the ether, to be replaced by Ugly Betty. Whoever made that decision should fear my wrath, I’m breaking out the voodoo dolls as we speak.
The cast is rounded off by Veronica Cartwright (old witch Bun), Popular’s Sara Rue (Joanna’s best, and occasionally lesbian friend Penny), Paul Gross who plays the mysterious Darryl Van Horne. There’s also a nice bit of Cybil Shepherd to bring the lols later in the season. And I don’t think I’ve mentioned it but there’s also Matt Dallas, who is just delightful to look at. As is Eastwick itself, so you should watch this little magical gem and enjoy it while you still can.
P.S. For those of you not familiar with Matt Dallas, have a little clicky here and see what all the fuss is about.

As an avid fan of all things supernatural, I must express my utter disappointment with the news that Eastwick has been canned. Why is it that those tv execs with all the power continue to air (the not so) Ugly Betty, it lost its charm a season or two ago. We need Eastwick back NOW! And it wouldn’t hurt the ratings if they managed to bring back Chad in some form or another (a statue perhaps?)
