The days are short, the weather is cold and wet and the BBC newsreaders are raiding the dressing-up box. Yes, it’s that time of year again…
Children in Need, like all telethon-style events, is always a mixed bag. There’s an awful lot of dross and an occasional gem, and there’s the annual palaver of indulging the whimsy of soap casts and newsreaders to dress up, ruin good songs and lose their dignity.
Tonight, Alesha Dixon replaces Fearne Cotton (hurrah!) and joins Tess’n'Tel for presenting duties. We are promised the usual mix of pop songs, sketches, heartwarming/heartwrenching clips, silliness, people who can’t sing or dance still attempting to do it (oh, wait, I’m getting it mixed up with Saturday night’s telly) and rubbish bits from your local region. Peter Kay is putting together another hopefully funny video in yet another blatant bid to be a pop star, and no doubt he will confuse the nation even more as to whether he’s a genuinely funny national treasure or an egotistical famewhore. Most exciting of all, of course, is the first showing of some scenes from Doctor Who’s Christmas episodes…
