We all know the easiest way to get a TV show commisioned, especially on BBC3 or E4: Pitch it as “it’s [insert name of literally any TV show] crossed with Skins” and hey presto, you’ve got a series. So here’s Misfits, which bills itself as Heroes meets Skins. Yes, two shows which have the potential to be awesome, but for the most part opt not to. Will this follow the same trend? Jonathan Ross tweeted the other day that he’d seen a preview and his whole family loved it, so if it’s shit don’t blame me, blame him. (Don’t worry, I reckon he’s used to being blamed for stuff by now.)
We open with a group of ASBO teenagers on community service, who get hit by magic!lightning and develop superpowers. Time travel, mind reading, you know the sort of thing. Many theatrically-minded LCers were big fans of Spring Awakening, so you may be pleased to know that one of the Misfits is played by Iwan Rheon, who was Moritz in the tragically short-lived London run. Rheon’s character Simon can turn invisible when he feels ignored. And if that sounds suspiciously similar to Mystery Men’s Invisible Boy, who can only go see-through when nobody’s looking, shhh – If you don’t tell anyone, I won’t.
