After what feels like a very long break from the ‘Whoniverse’, Captain Jack, Gwen, Ianto, the Obviousmobile, the Hub and Beautiful Cardiff are back. More importantly, so are Rhys and PC Andy.
Torchwood: Children of Earth is part of a week where TV finally gets better after being in the doldrums for a bit. This third series of the Welsh sci-fi-and-shagging drama lands straight on BBC One, and instead of being a long thirteen part series, they’ve turned it into this year’s Five Days or Criminal Justice and made it a five-consecutive-nights epic.
There has been some grumbling amongst fans about this, and perhaps that’s fair enough given we’ve not got much of Doctor Who proper this year and the new series of The Sarah Jane Adventures is still a while off. However, I think the move could be inspired. The two series that previously did this five-nightly stripping were amazing, so that’s a good sign in itself. The idea of Torchwood having a longer plotline is intriguing, and it has very different storytelling potential than a one-hour episode. Plus Russell T Davies is very much on board and has done a lot of the writing, and he writes these characters better than anyone (witness the scenes in the Hub in ‘The Stolen Earth’ if you don’t believe me). The trailer also makes it look immense.
Will it live up to the hype? I really, really hope so. Join me tomorrow for the verdict on episode one.
