Tonight is the night many have been waiting for, the Eurovision Song Contest. This year’s contest, in Moscow, has already been hit by controversy with the police breaking up gay rights protests earlier, and the Norway singer not having his photo taken with the gays, as revealed on here by Paul a few days ago and mentioned on Twitter by no less than The Pet Shop Boys (or their people) just this afternoon.
However, it’s not all about the nasty side of life, there’s also the music and the telly to think about – so which entries should you be looking out for tonight? Our own Jade Ewen deserves a good placing, the song she’s performing may divide opinion, but she’s a good singer with a cute smile and a delightful personality (unlike, say, Daz Sampson) and hopefully that should count for something. We also have Graham Norton on presenting duties, and he feels like such a natural fit for this gig that it’s hard to believe Wogan was still the voice of Eurovision just twelve months ago.
As for the other countries, friends and forum users tell me some of the best entries went out in the semi-finals: the 80s-cheese-tastic Belarus entry and the insane Bulgaria act replete with chain mail and armour. Of those that did qualify, acts of note include Iceland’s pretty ballad, Armenia’s happy dancing song and Azerbijan’s hobbits-on-my-mind ditty.
The BBC Eurovision website has videos for all the entries, including those that didn’t make the final, for those who want a sneak preview, or want to muse over how great it would have been if Bulgaria had won…
